    The Edmund Halley you mention in the Hollow Earth piece is the same Edmund Halley of Halley’s Comet fame.
    IIRC, when Newton first realized his theory of gravitation predicted no net force inside a hold spherical shell, he was suspicious of his result and this contributed to some delay in the publication of his Principia.
