Greetings from Australia, TRC crew. Listening to your latest episode and the discussion of the “SIN” or “SIN Number” as you said some people say it, reminded me of the term coined to describe this misuse, RAS Syndrome, or Redundant Acronym Syndrome Syndrome.
New Scientist magazine came up with the term in 2001. I remember reading the little piece they wrote about it at the time, and LOLing out loud. Here’s more info:
